CATCHWEIGHTS...
CREATING TRUE TOURNAMENT BRACKET!
Since
2004, the IKF made a pledge to all
fighters and trainers to do our best to make sure every division bracket in the
IKF Tournament will have a minimum of 4
fighters or be subject to being closed. Closing a Division is NEVER a
desired option to us. Mainly since we know how much each and every fighter
prepares for the IKF Tournament. With that
being said, we "DO" do our best to try and make each and every
bracket as challenging as possible. A TRUE "Tournament"
bracket is when the Champion and the 2nd place fighter had to fight at least 2
times over the weekend to make it to their Championship bout. Sure, in some
cases, this is not possible due to everything from rule style differences,
weight and in the Junior Divisions, age adds in another obstacles. Still, we do
our best.
Over the years we have been told by most fighters that they "WANT"
to make sure they fight at least 2 times in the tournament. In fact we get more
complaints from fighters in TWO fighter brackets (because they only get to
fight 1 time) than we do with fighters in large brackets.
- COMPETITION VS NO ONE TO FIGHT
Over
the years, we have seen other more important reasons why it is god to avoid any
2 fighter brackets.
- If 1 of the 2 fighters were to NO SHOW, the other goes home with nothing.
There are no forfeit or walkover champions.
- If 1 of the 2 fighters doesn't make weight, the other goes home with
nothing.
Again, there are no forfeit or walkover champions.
- If 1 of the 2 fighters doesn't pass their pre-fight physical, the other
goes home with nothing.
Again, there are no forfeit or walkover champions.
- If 1 of the 2 fighters checks in, weighs in but never shows up for his/her
fight (Which has happened 3 times), the other goes home with nothing.
Again, there are no forfeit or walkover champions.
No fighter want's to travel a great distance, or ANY distance for that
matter, for nothing. It was because of the fighters and the trainers why we
established this rule years ago. So you can see why we STRONGLY
avoid leaving just 2 fighters in a bracket which is why you see several "Catchweights"
in the brackets now and possibly even more before this week is done.
CATCHWEIGHTS
Catchweight
means the combining of two different weight divisions to create stronger or more
competition for the contenders.
When we make a catchweight, we try to create
a weight division that BOTH divisions can fit into with little trouble. We add a
couple of lbs from the lower weight and drop a couple of lbs from the top
weight. This makes the matching of all the fighters as fair as possible. We
TRULY believe when we do this that it not only creates a stronger bracket with
an opportunity to fight and win in a true "Tournament" system, but it
also makes it less possible for a fighter in a 2 or even 3 fighter bracket to
arrive at the Tournament, make weight, only to find out they have no opponent...

TRAINERS & FIGHTERS
MATCHMAKING
For This Years
IKF World Classic Begins THIS WEEK
This week we will begin posting requests on "MOST"
of the fighter brackets of 3 or less fighters. our GOAL as a "TOURNAMENT"
is to hope each and every fighter fights AT LEAST TWO TIMES over the weekend.
However, sometimes this is not possible due to the number of fighters
surrounding the noted divisions. Still, where we see an option to accomplish
this, we will post a note below your name, or, have you already moved into a
proposed "Catchweight (Combining 2 weightclasses and moving the bottom
weight up and the top weight down) in hopes you are in an actual "TOURNAMENT
BRACKET".
As we begin matchmaking Please be aware of these important
"IKF
TOURNAMENT MATCHMAKING RULES"
If you are wanting to request
to move from where you are currently seeded to another bracket or rule style.
- If there is NO OTHER FIGHTER in a fighters bracket, he/she can move to
a different weightclass or rule style at any time.
- If a fighter has at least 1 matched fighter in their registered
bracket, they cannot move unless there are 5 or more other contenders in the
division they are requesting to move from.
Since this is a "TOURNAMENT", we try to make it a "LEGIT" TOURNAMENT
match up.
Meaning we try to assure that to become a "TOURNAMENT" Champion, that fighter will fight a
minimum of 2 times to win the Title.
- If the division has 4 or more other fighters, the requesting fighter
may ONLY move to another division if it has;
- MORE Contenders in it.
- The experience level of those in the division the fighter is moving to
is greater than the bracket they are requesting to move out of.

event to help our Amateur Kickboxers and Muay Thai Fighters strive for the grand

ONE RULE STYLE
Originally Posted On December 7th, 2013

I thought to take a moment
during this rainy and cold day and holiday down-time to post more of my thoughts
about our great sport of Kickboxing. Some may have read my thoughts a few days
ago on the Glory Page on the importance of supporting groups like Glory
and K-1 to assist in their ratings and continued growth. However, I
think to add to this, we also need to start thinking about getting most in our
sport on board for one rule style.
Let me be clear, this does not mean that sanctioning bodies will not have
the options to sanction all types of rules styles. However, from a marketing
standpoint...the sooner we get the general public educated on one rule style,
the sooner I believe they will come to support our sport through a more
simplified understanding of the expected rules in a particular match, and or
sport. K-1 and Glory rules are pretty similar as I know them and
seems to be accepted by most. I say this because even those who are adamant
about Muay Thai and its claim of superiority etc...( not starting anything
) when orgs like Glory and K-1 come a calling with big dollars,
marketing etc...no one seems to care about their particular rule style...they
just fight! Right?
As we look at the UFC and other MMA orgs... there are some small
differences in rules but for the most part, they, kickbox and take it to the
ground where most of the rules are pretty general...right?
When most fans go to a MMA match, they pretty much know what to expect. Go
to a Kickboxing show and many of them ( mine too ) have two to three
rules styles on one event and it's just confusing the heck out of the general
fan. I think that its time for the alphabet orgs to get behind this idea and
move this forward for the greater good of the sport. I hope too that orgs. like
Glory will (as it seems for the most part) be open to working
with all orgs regardless of letters and focus on the skills of the fighters.
I noticed that the upcoming WKA Tournament has announced Glory
Rules...
Well again, aren't those the same as K-1 rules?
What I'm not suggesting is getting into picking sides with Glory or
K-1, although, I know how the game works.
For example, I do IKF
Events...others do WAKO events etc.
Its all good and not the point
I'm attempting to make. However, I am suggesting that we as a sport, try and get
on the same page and give the style of fighting a basic name like the new INTERNATIONAL
RULES OR WORLD CLASS RULES and everyone will know that they are the
same rules used by the big boys and when the day comes to represent, you, the
fighter, will be ready to fight in this class without much alteration to your
form.
We know that at least here in America, as my memory serves me, that K-1
developed these type rules...again, at least here in the States as I'm not sure
otherwise, and frankly, it was a big hit! I too think they got it right. You
see, its simple, Glory will not call its rules K-1 and Vice
versa...which is just business and understood... More reason to my point of an
international type name. Also, many complain about commissions not understanding
the rules for kickboxing...well heck...again, there are so many rules!
This suggestion will simplify rules for commissions to be better educated
and therefore do a better job at judging. In Closing and not to be so long
winded, from semi contact to full contact bouts, get everyone doing the same
thing and in a shorter period of time...millions more will fall in love with our
great sport as we move closer to our deserving place in contact sports around
the world! What do you think about creating one rule style and what would be
your suggestions in making this change for what I believe will ultimately
advance everyone's cause?
Thanks in advance for your time.
Perhaps some of the big boys will read
this piece and further the movement...I have a good idea of how this could
work...but would love to hear your thoughts too. Forward March!
(feel
free to repost on your forums as I will more than likely have this piece on the
IKF News page as well)

ONE RULE STYLE
Or
Just
ANOTHER RULE STYLE?
The IKF has Plans to
adapt such a rule style, which has been discussed among the IKF since December of last year. Right now that rule
style is named
IKF
WORLD CLASS RULES.
However, the bigger question is what to do with the existing
Rule styles under the IKF Banner. Although
American Style - Above the waist Full Contact Rules may be dieing out here in
the USA, it's thriving in Eastern Canada and Europe. International rules seems
to be the least desired during the calendar year in regards to Title Fights and
rule styles on regularly sanctioned events, but it's now neck and neck as the
most popular rule style at the IKF World Classic.
We've all seen the continued growth of Muay Thai from last to
first at the World Classic over the years and at events throughout the USA. Muay
Thai practitioners of course have the sport of MMA to thank for that. Many stand
up kickboxers and Muay Thai Fighters train in Muay Thai to prepare themselves
for a career in MMA. A career that has shown to us all that pays more than
Kickboxing or Muay Thai Promotions.
So would unifying the styles truly help the sport of
Kickboxing/Muay Thai? Or would it be best to continue to offer options to the
thousands who still thrive and love the styles of Stand-Up fighting?
Look for Future postings here and on Facebook of the actual
format of this Rule style. To address any preconceived notions, the IKF has no desire to do away with "Muay
Thai" Rules or above the waste Full Contact Rules. However we are
looking into how to revive the International Rules division, which may indeed be
the new IKF World Class Rules.

Take In The Moment...
For those who have
been around awhile, Lets not forget these famous words our good friend and
IKF
World Ambassador Brooks Mason wrote several years ago when
the IKF World Classic
Tournament was just a USA Event. Come Championship Sunday, you may
want to read this to yourself to be reminded what it all comes down to...
ANY Given Sunday...
"The saying in football is that on
any given Sunday any team can win.
The champions of our sport will have no
easy time at the IKF Nationals (Now IKF Worlds) as the best of the best come to
meet the challenge. Fighters rise to the task when faced with great talent and
our returning champions surely provide that. Don't hand out the belts quite yet
as new talent will certainly emerge and increase the field of fighters to watch.
As Jesse Finney puts it "Stay positive".
I am positive there
will be great fights for all the belts and we will enjoy the best tournament in
America.
Looking forward to seeing all of you."
